Based in Minneapolis, trumpeter and bandleader Jules Herman was born to musical parents. He earned College Degrees in Music and History at Moorhead State University playing his horn. After teaching for a short time, Lawrence Welk hired Herman as first trumpet, which began his musical career playing hotels and clubs nationally with the Welk Orchestra, Griff Willams & His Society Orchestra, and Wayne King & His Orchestra. In 1950 he organized his own band and after a year of club dates became the “house band” at the famous Prom Ballroom in St. Paul until it was sold and razed in 1986. The Jules Herman Orchestra was the preminent Big Band for dancing in the Twin Cities area from 1950 onward.
