Studio Camera Rig: Kit #1:
Whero Films owns and operates several custom built studio camera rigs designed for small mirrorless and DSLR cameras. This 15mm rod setup is referred to as “Ruby” is the second of many rigs that DOP James McLeod has built for commercial use.
The brief was to satisfy the needs of a Director, a Camera Operator, and a Focus Puller, but also be highly functional for solo shooters.
Assembled from a range of parts by RedRock Micro, Zacuto, Swedish Chameleon, and Tilta, “Ruby” natively hosts a Nikon D810 setup. A Nikon VR 24-70mm ƒ2.8 and VR 70-200mm ƒ2.8 quickly interchange to cover most popular focal ranges.
The base of the rig is built on two pair of 18” RedRock carbon fibre 15mm LWS rods stacked to separate the optical and stabilisation attachments. The top rods feature the camera’s baseplate, lens support, Focus / zoom wheels, and a light weight matt box that can host two 4×4” filter trays. The lower rods hold the side frame, handles, and universal Zacuto arms for mounting screens and recorders. A universal cheese plate also features on the lower rods for mounting to tripods or shoulder mounts.
To rent “Ruby” in her full state would be to include the Nikon D810, pro Nikon zoom lenses, Sound Devices PIX220 HD 12bit 4444 recorder, and BlackMagic Video Assist focusing screen / backup recorder. Devices are powers remotely with a V-lock long-term battery solution (or cabled to mains power).
Renting as a complete HD studio kit will compromise production costs but not optical quality. The full kit includes the D810 camera, hard case, Nikon zoom lenses, 15mm rod rig, monitors, zoom and follow focus, tripod head, legs (and optional wheels). Everything you need to remotely capture your talent and environment from a stationary point.
