He attended Lafayette Elementary School and graduated from New Ulm High School. Jack’s first guitar was a light blue Fender Jaguar electric guitar. In 1965 Volinkaty connected with John Ginkel, Tom Ginkel, and Bruce Melzer forming the rock & roll combo The Shags, starting Jack’s musical career. The name “Shags” came from a superstitious ghost roaming around a Minnesota River road. Keith Verthein, a pharmacist from Lafayette, became the band’s promoter. In the late 1960s Jack wrote the song “Satin Sheets” which took five minutes to write, a year to sell, and three years to make it big. In 1973 Jeanne Pruett picked up the song and made it a smash hit on the American country charts. “Satin Sheets” was also recorded by Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Dolly Parton, Barbara Fairchild, and most recently Martina McBride. It was recognized by BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc.) as one of the most-performed songs in their entire repertoire of more than three million songs.
