Der graduated from Mankato High School in 1948. He started his musical career by taking violin lessons, then Musical Director for his high school band Ray Saunders encouraged him to play the tuba. Der served in The United States Army from 1950 to 1952 in Wisconsin, where he played in the Army Band. He purchased a string bass in the 1950s for playing on modern dance gigs. In 1966, Cammack formed The Katzenjamers with Johnny Gag and Clete Frederick, and recorded a couple of albums. He performed along with The St. Peter Men&#8217;s Choir and also played the &#8220;Polka Mass&#8221; at many Catholic Churches in Southern and Central Minnesota. Overall Cammack performed with the following bands and musicians: Spike Haskell and The Jolly Millers, The Viking Accordion Band, Lou Pieper and His Orchestra, Norm Wilke &amp; The Little Fishermen, The Eddie Skeets&#8217; Orchestra, The Six Fat Dutchmen, and The Whoopee John Orchestra, The Katzenjamers, Elmer Scheid And His Hoolerie Band, The Ivan Kahle Band, Larry Rysavy, Schell&#8217;s Hobo Band, Erv Reutzel Band, Whoopee Norm Edelbeck and The Dairyland Dutchmen, Carl and The Country Dutchmen, Ray Stoltzenberg and The Northern Playboys, Little Joe&#8217;s Dance Band, Lynn Kearns &amp; The Rhythm Club Swing Band, Erwin Suess and The Hoolerie Dutchmen, The Mankato Elks Band, Les Fields &amp; The Turkey River All-Stars, The Blue Ox Jazz Babies, Al Maves And The Swingin&#8217; Laendlers, Harvey Becker and The Riverside Dutchmen, Carl Colby, Michael&#8217;s Minstrels, John &#8220;Big Lou&#8221; Kaveney, The Andy Lawrence Orchestra, and Mar Tenoff. He also played in the company band at Katolight Corporation in Mankato, where he worked.
