Lowell first caught the ear of the banjo on a radio show in Chicago in the 1940s. He went home to New Ulm and bought a second-hand banjo for $10. He learned about other banjos, ordered a pectrum banjo, and started an era that he called the \u201cBanjo World.\u201d Lowell claimed the banjo was like a travel pass for him, giving him opportunities to perform on the Delta Queen and other riverboats and in various parts of the U.S. and Europe. As a journalist at The Mankato Free Press, he was drawn to the historical research and writing side of banjo activities, including contributing articles to BMG (Banjo, Mandolin, and Guitar) periodical and writing his own regular column \u201cBanjo World.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
