The most famous of the organizations he directed was the Second Regiment Band, which received acclaim both in the Minnesota National Guard and also highest honors from Regiment&#8217;s Headquarters during the Mexican Border Expedition of 1916-1917. Captain Hofmeister wrote many compositions for concert orchestra, military band, and vocals. His most famous was the &#8220;Minnesota Centennial March&#8221;. Walt, his son, called his father an \u201cexcellent instructor\u201d, giving him credit for rearing an amazing family of musicians. The Hofmeister family could play many musical instruments; the entire group being able to represent a complete orchestral unit. All of them were engaged in music either part-time or as professional performers. Walt went one step further than his father by engaging in arranging as well as composing. He did considerable arranging for bands, orchestras and for vocal units. Most of his arranging and composing deals were with old-tyme tunes, marches, and trombone novelties. The Hofmeister family consists of Hayden, Frank, Peter, Hugo, Otto, Walt, Theodore, Anthony, Ludwig, sister Josephine (Mrs. Albert Hacker), and mother Maria.
