Red started on violin and switched to clarinet and sax. While in high school he started writing arrangements for city bands. At the University of Minnesota, Red wrote arrangements for the U of M Band, including the &#8220;Minnesota Rouser&#8221;, still played at games and events today. He earned his Masters Degree and supported himself by playing and arranging music on campus. In 1933 Red was chosen to write the full arrangement when the U of M Band<br \/>\nplayed with Eugene Ormandy and the Minnesota Orchestra. He was paid well, and decided to make arranging his life\u2019s work. In 1937 Red started arranging for the Whoopee John Orchestra, and wrote the arrangements for Lawrence Welk\u2019s first published song, \u201cThe Champagne Polka\u201d. He worked as staff arranger for KSTP radio for ten years, musically arranged the <em>Aquatennial Follies<\/em> (from 1941 to 1963), and the <em>Dorothy Lewis Ice Shows<\/em>. Red was arranger for The Golden Strings Orchestra at the Radisson Hotel in downtown Minneapolis, and wrote musical arrangements used at football shows for different University bands from coast to coast. Red was entertainment director for the Minnesota Vikings for 25 years, and wrote &amp; arranged the still-heard theme song &#8220;Skol Vikings&#8221;.
